Compared to many other battles in the Civil War, including the battle of Perryville that August, the Battle of Middle Creek in Floyd County was a mere skirmish. Out of a total of 4,600 soldiers combined from both sides of the war, there were only 25 Union losses and 65 Union losses. This was only .0145% of the total casualties in the Civil War. However, this battle ensured the Union control of Eastern Kentucky due to the Union's victory. Lead by James Garfield, future United States president, the Union volunteer forces pushed back the Confederate forces, who were lead by Mexican war veteran General Humphrey Marshall. This victory was the first major Civil War battle fought on Kentucky soil and kept out Confederate forces until the bloody battle of Perryville eight months later.
